Around DZG

DZG is much more than a zoo;  hundreds of animals inhabit an ancient wooded hillside around the ruins of the 11th century Dudley Castle and share a site with the world's largest single collection of  Modernist Tecton structures.

The site has long played an important role within the community and stands proud above the market town of Dudley.

Throughout the yeaTudor costume at Dudley Zoological Gardensrs it has seen royalty and rock stars -   both Queen Elizabeth I and II visited the castle and princes of pop T.Rex, Rod Stewart and Status Quo have filled the courtyard. It has witnessed the births of many rare and exotic species and seen the 12-strong group of Tectons granted World Monuments Fund status.

The 40-acre site is also home to hundreds of endangered bats who live in limestone caverns beneath the zoo – the largest man-made caves in Britain.

Animal and zoo keeper at Dudley Zoological GardensThe walls of Dudley Castle are embedded with fossils known as trilobites – the only animals the world has ever known to have eyes made of crystal – trilobite Calymene blumenbachii is known worldwide as the Dudley Bug.
This now extinct family, distantly related to spiders and scorpions, is preserved in microscopic detail in the walls of both the castle and adjoining Tudor range.

There's just so much to see at DZG . . .
