The zoo which opened in May 1937, covers an area of approximately 40 acres, and is home to over 1300 animals. This unique site includes two scheduled monuments, being an 11th century castle and limestone caverns, and 12 Grade 2 listed Tecton buildings (four listed as Grade 2*).
A charity governed by a board of trustees (maximum 13), answerable to the Charity Commission. The responsibility of the trustees is to meet the requirements of the Articles of Association, whose objectives are for the benefit and education of the public, the collection, preservation and care of the animals and conservation of the site and buildings.

The board of trustees meet on a quarterly basis throughout the year with the AGM taking place in June.
The organisation is managed on a day to day basis by the Chief Executive, Peter Suddock and his management team.
Members of British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquaria (BIAZA), European Association of Zoos & Aquaria (EAZA), World Association of Zoos & Aquaria (WAZA), British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers & Attractions and Heart of England Attractions.
We are involved in many European breeding programmes for our endangered species and are the registered stud book keeper for Black Lemurs.
